Welcome to Gaming Composer: A Love Letter to Game Soundtracks and an Ongoing Study

Hi, I’m Hynozia! I’m a soundtrack enthusiast, JRPG fan, and gaming composer in both senses: a composer who games, and a composer of game music.

What This Blog Is About

Gaming Composer is my open notebook, a musical laboratory.

I’ll be studying game music openly, digging into melody, harmony, structure, instrumentation and orchestration. Real analysis, not just appreciation. How does a chord progression build tension before a boss fight? Why does that battle theme hit differently in a later chapter? What makes a town theme feel like home?

My bigger goal? To build a music codex.

I learn game music the way we learn language — through immersion and pattern recognition. Game soundtracks use a shared vocabulary such as harmonic colors that suggest duty, textures that imply tension, rhythms that hint at conflict. These aren’t random. They’re grammar.

Through this blog, I’m building a game music codex — learning the grammar that composers use. Not rigid rules, but a growing vocabulary of patterns and expressive tools used across games.

What’s Coming

I’m starting with SRPGs (Strategy RPGs) because that’s where my heart is. Strategy or tactical RPGs deal with politics, ethics, difficult choices, and consequences. Their music supports extended thinking and moral tension, which makes SRPG soundtracks especially rich in structure and development.

Over time, this blog will expand into sound design, interactive audio, my favorite JRPG soundtracks, other genres, composition theory, and how music shapes player choice and experience.

Mostly, I want to share my love for game soundtracks with others who feel the same way.

An Invitation

If you’re a composer, game developer, or someone who’s ever paused in the middle of a game just to listen, you’re in the right place.

Let’s explore this together.
